Mars Research

Welcome to

Mars Research is home to the Creative AI program at Mars College. We research and develop AI-based world building and simulation tools while educating the next generation of AI-enabled artists and creative workers.

We believe that AI is a transformative tool for self-empowerment and lifestyle engineering. We have helped students from a wide range of backgrounds and skill levels transform their lives and creative practices using this technology.

We work with established artists and creatives who want to adapt their practice, new and developing creatives looking to expand their creative capabilities, and established developers and researchers who are pushing the boundaries of creative expression.

Mars Research Creative AI Program

Our Creative AI program is our flagship program and the central focus of our camps operation. The program evolved over many years since its humble beginnings at Gene Kogan's Machine Learning for Artists (ml4a) program.

In this program you will learn:

  • An overall methodology for using Creative AI to expand your creative practice.

  • The latest techniques in image, video, audio, and text generation/manipulation.

  • How to use the latest AI features of creative tools like Photoshop & Premiere.

  • How to use ChatGPT, Claude, and other large language models.

  • The fundamental mechanics that underly LLMs and AI technologies.

  • How to create your own AI chatbot/agent.

  • How do design and develop products utilizing AI.

Who is this program for?

For Artists & Creatives:
Reimagine your creative practice by integrating generative AI tools into your workflows. You'll work with experts in the field, gaining hands-on experience and learning how to apply AI to your artistic vision.

For Researchers:
Mars Research offers time and space for deep investigation, an environment where you can focus on your research without the continual pressure of delivering a product to industry before it’s ready. You will collaborate with a community of brilliant peers, and receive continuous feedback and support as you dive deep into your chosen topic.

For Entrepreneurs:
Our product lab is the perfect place to incubate your next big idea. With guidance from experienced product builders, you'll have the opportunity to develop AI-driven solutions and bring them to market.

Facilities

Mars Research has academic space, coworking space, and housing available on both the Mars desert campus and at locations nearby in Bombay Beach. For housing we offer bedrooms, trailers, heavy-duty tents, self-build apartments, and parking spaces for vans, RVs, and other auto-based campers.

We will be constructing a large academic space on the desert campus that will feature both classroom and exhibition space. We will convert this space into an art installation over the course of the semester and offer an exhibition of the work at the end of the semester.

Costs for participation vary depending on housing accommodations. There is no tuition, but camp fees typically range from $300-$500/month for those who need housing and $100-$200/month for those who do not. Scholarships are available. No one will be turned away because of an inability to pay.
