I started creating the Little Martians series on the first year of our project, using local clay. One of the greatest things about a project in which I can easily produce a lot of small sculptures — thanks to the silicon molds! — is how much experimentation with painting on ceramics I can do.

Although Mars College is a seasonal program, some of our activities have evolved into perennial projects, reappearing each year in a slighly more mature form, and inspiring another round of love and care. These long-term initiatves become mini-enterprises, giving us an undercurrent of projects that may potentially help sustain us in the future, or provide a revenue stream for Martians looking to grow deeper roots into our world.

In the Spring of 2020 I had the pleasure of participating in a new residency called brahman.ai in the Sonoran Desert. Brahman.ai runs in a long history of US architectural and educational projects such as Black Mountain College, Taliesin III East, Taliesin West, and Arcosanti. Like the Taliesin East/West moment this project is seasonal, lasting for three months a year.

For me, making art is a way of connecting to the space where I am and the people around me. Being in the desert, dealing with such a harsh environment, with sand storms, intense sun, freezing nights, is a constant challenge, but one thing that is abundant is clay. Our desert is filled with clay!

We’re living in the future. Temperatures rise pushing people into new environments. Wealth inequality has made home prices unaffordable. Increased corporate power has come at the cost of public infrastructure and a public safety net. University education has become extremely expensive and job prospects uncertain.
